A team fuelled by the first British SAF

Kuehne + Nagel has entered into a partnership with IAG Cargo to reduce its emissions by using 8 million l of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) – the first batch of such fuel to be produced in the UK.

Deliveries will take place in 2022. The project will save about 18,300 t of CO2, the equivalent of 150 British Airways flights between London and New York with the fuel-efficient Boeing B787.

The SAF, manufactured from cooking oil and food waste, will be supplied by Phillips 66, an energy manufacturing and logistics enterprise. It will produce it in its Humber Refinery in Lincolnshire (England), the first facility to produce SAF at scale in the UK.

IAG, which already partnered Kuehne+Nagel last year to power a charter chain of 16 flights from Stuttgart to Atlanta, was the first European airline group to commit to 10% of its fuel being SAF by 2030. IAG Cargo CCO John Cheetham pointed out that “partnerships like these are key as we continue to look at ways to support sustainable air cargo.” (ah)
