A peak year for the port of Kiel

The port of Kiel reported record volumes of 7.89 million t of cargo and 2.82 million passengers in 2023, marking its busiest year in terms of freight and passenger traffic. This includes 1.64 million ferry passengers and 1.19 million cruise passengers. The port experienced growth in both freight (up 3.1%) and passenger traffic (up 22%) compared to the previous year.

The Gothenburg route maintained high freight volumes, while the Oslo route saw modest increases. Cargo to the Baltic region showed a recovery following earlier declines due to the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

Investments are being made to expand and improve efficiency at the Ostuferhafen, the port’s largest cargo and logistics centre, which handled 45% of the total volume in 2023. Plans include the development of additional storage and logistics areas and the enhancement of facilities for both freight and passenger services.

Until 2028, over EUR 60 million have been earmarked for sustainability and capacity improvements. The number of cruise ships visiting the port is also expected to rise. (pb)
