100,000th train through new Gotthard tunnel

The 100,000th train passed through the new Gotthard base tunnel (GBT) in Switzerland on 5 March 2019. Operated by SBB Cargo International, the train was hauling freight for the Swiss intermodal transport provider Hupac. The Swiss freight railway SBB Cargo said that the GBT functions as planned and is stable and safe.

Last year, GBT's share of railfreight amounted to 59%, with up to 120 freight trains on peak days, 83% of which were operated by SBB Cargo and SBB Cargo International.

The efficiency of Switzerland’s rail network will rise again at the end of 2020 when the Ceneri base tunnel and the 4 m corridor between Basel and Chiasso go into service. (ben)
