Jul 3, 2026 at 4:06 PMThe Grimaldi Group today unveiled its new ship „Grande Istanbul“ at the car terminal of the Kocaeli port complex in Turkey. This event took place in the presence of high-ranking representatives, including Edoardo Rixi, the Italian Deputy Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, and Ertuğ Şevket Aksoy, the Deputy Governor of Kocaeli, as reported by Grimaldi. Also present were Aras Serafettin, President of the International Transport Association (UND), and other representatives from the maritime industry.
Guido Grimaldi (pictured), Corporate Short Sea Shipping Commercial Director of the Grimaldi Group, welcomed guests aboard the new ship. In his speech, he emphasized the strategic importance of Turkey within the group’s global maritime and logistics network.
Sustainability in focus
The „Grande Istanbul“ is part of a series of 17 ammonia-capable Pure Car & Truck Carriers (PCTCs) commissioned by the Grimaldi Group. These ships are designed to enhance the efficiency and sustainability of the group’s global automotive logistics. With a loading capacity of up to 9,241 Car Equivalent Units (CEUs), the „Grande Istanbul“ is reported by Grimaldi to be capable of reducing CO₂ emissions per transported unit by up to 50% compared to previous ship generations.
The „Grande Istanbul“ will operate in the EuroMed service of the Grimaldi Group, which connects several ports in Northern Europe and the Mediterranean. The ports served include Borusan, Derince, Gemlik, Haydarpaşa, and İzmir in Turkey. The service transports a variety of vehicles, including cars, vans, trucks, and containers.
