May 21, 2026 at 1:29 PMGMR Hyderabad International Airport Ltd. (GHIAL) inaugurated the new Cargo Terminal 2 at the central Indian airport Hyderabad on May 18, 2026. This facility aims to support the strategic development of the airport as a significant destination for air freight and logistics. The terminal has been designed to meet the increasing demand for domestic and international cargo services and offers modern infrastructure for airlines, freight forwarders, logistics providers, and regulatory authorities.
The new terminal spans an area of 16,864 m² and has been designed for operational efficiency and long-term scalability. Initially, a handling capacity of approximately 50,000 tons per year is expected, with planned expansion areas allowing for a doubling to 100,000 tons per year.
Key infrastructure for the logistics industry
GHIAL’s CEO, Kadhir Kadhiravan, emphasized that the commissioning of Cargo Terminal 2 represents a crucial step in positioning Hyderabad as a leading air freight and logistics hub in Asia. He stated, “This facility is not just an addition to our infrastructure portfolio but a clear commitment. We have designed the new terminal to serve the most demanding cargo segments, from life-saving pharmaceuticals to time-sensitive express shipments, with the precision, speed, and reliability that global supply chains require.”
Sanjiv Edward, CEO of GMR Aero Cargo & Logistics, added that the opening of the new cargo terminal in Hyderabad marks a significant step towards strengthening the air logistics system in India. GMR Aero reaffirms its commitment to top-notch infrastructure and support for the industry in the region.
The terminal features dedicated zones for incoming and outgoing cargo, spacious areas for export and import processing, and multi-tier shelving systems to optimize storage. A standout feature of Cargo Terminal 2 is the large, fully temperature-controlled pharmaceutical zone, specifically designed for handling pharmaceutical and perishable goods. With advanced temperature monitoring systems, the terminal ensures a continuous cold chain, which is crucial for Hyderabad’s role as a global center for pharmaceuticals.
Additionally, the new terminal enables optimized processing, faster regulatory approvals, and significantly reduced dwell times for cargo. Improved connectivity between air and land sides, dedicated road access, and a robust energy infrastructure enhance the operational resilience of the terminal and ensure uninterrupted service for all cargo segments, including pharmaceuticals, perishables, express shipments, and general cargo.
In line with GHIAL’s commitment to environmentally conscious development, the new terminal integrates energy-efficient lighting systems, optimized heating, ventilation, and air conditioning, as well as resource-saving building materials. Through intelligent layout planning and workflow optimization, equipment downtime is minimized, and overall energy consumption is reduced, embedding sustainability into the daily operations of the terminal. Furthermore, the terminal is equipped with a multi-tier fire detection and alarm system that allows for early hazard detection and ensures the highest safety standards for cargo, infrastructure, and personnel.
