May 21, 2026 at 11:25 AMThe opening of a new cargo terminal at Palermo Airport (PMO) represents a significant advancement for air freight logistics in Southern Italy. With an area of approximately 900 m², it offers three times the space of the previous facilities and is designed to meet the growing demands in the field of goods transportation.
Modernization and safety standards
The new terminal has been established in the former arrivals hall of the airport in the largest city of Sicily. The renovation measures included a comprehensive modernization of the interiors as well as the technical systems. Additionally, the building has been adapted to the latest fire protection and earthquake safety regulations. The infrastructure is equipped with advanced security technologies, including video surveillance, smoke detection and extraction systems, as well as modern screening facilities. New equipment includes a cargo X-ray machine and a standard X-ray machine for personnel, both of which comply with international standards.
According to Gianfranco Battisti, the CEO of Gesap, the operating company of Falcone Borsellino Airport, the commissioning of the new cargo terminal is a strategic step. It strengthens the airport’s position in the air freight market, which currently represents a growing and value-adding segment. Battisti emphasizes that the new infrastructure creates business opportunities for the region and promotes the development of e-commerce, high-quality agricultural products, integrated logistics, and international trade flows.
Efficient operations
The design of the terminal allows for efficient handling of goods movements. A covered ramp on the land side, equipped with three height-adjustable ramps, facilitates access for trucks and the quick transfer of cargo to the control areas. On the air side, a special traffic management system ensures the swift loading of shipments onto departing aircraft.
The cargo terminal is also the first step of a comprehensive infrastructure plan that envisions a significant expansion of areas for freight transport in the coming years. A tripling of the current capacities is planned to meet the increasing demands in the air freight sector.
