Mar 25, 2026 at 11:26 AMSalvatore Lauro, a significant player in the Italian shipping industry, passed away on March 22, 2026, at the age of 75 in his hometown of Ischia. The news of his death has caused great sorrow within the maritime community. The Federazione del Mare, an association of companies and organizations in the maritime economy, expressed its condolences and honored Lauro’s life’s work.
Tribute to a Pioneer of Shipping
Mario Mattioli, President of the Federazione del Mare, expressed his sorrow over the loss: “On behalf of the entire maritime cluster united in the Federazione del Mare, I extend my heartfelt condolences on the untimely death of Salvatore Lauro.” Lauro is described as a defining figure in the Italian shipping market who clearly recognized the importance of the sea for Italy. He played a key role in the introduction of the hydrofoil, which enabled a fast connection between Naples and the surrounding islands.
Lauro’s entrepreneurial skill and innovative spirit contributed to his establishment of a significant company in Italian shipping. His ability to diversify various business sectors while remaining politically active is highlighted as remarkable.
A Life Dedicated to the Maritime Economy
Salvatore Lauro, son of shipowner Agostino Lauro, continued the family tradition while also introducing important innovations to the industry. He was a shareholder in the family shipping company Alilauro, which includes companies such as Alicost and Capitan Morgan. In 2011, he founded the first business network in the tourism sector, recognized by Confindustria (Arcipelago Rete d’Impresa per il turismo).
Additionally, Lauro was a member of the Confitarma council and served as honorary president of “Città del Sapere,” an organization promoting the cultural heritage of Naples.
His entrepreneurial activities also included the acquisition of “Compagnia delle Isole Spa,” which won the tender for the privatization of Siremar in 2011. This agreement included state subsidies for public transport connections amounting to €55.6 million per year over a period of twelve years.
Lauro’s commitment to shipping was not without challenges. In 2015, he became president of Siremar-Compagnia delle Isole; however, the awarding of the tender was later declared invalid by the courts of Tar del Lazio.
