Seaports Niedersachsen Increase Throughput by Four Percent
Aug 17, 2025 at 5:33 PMAround 5 million customers travel each year with Scandlines on the Puttgarden-Rødby route – why not use this time on board to learn more about the fragile ecosystem of the Baltic Sea? Since 2014, the German Nature Conservation Association (NABU) and the shipping company Scandlines have been working together – for a ferry service that protects the climate and the environment.
(Hamburg/Berlin) The common goal is ships without air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. Innovative ship propulsion systems already reduce emissions today and help significantly reduce underwater noise – to protect the harbor porpoises and other marine life in the Baltic Sea.
NABU also supports Scandlines on the path to greater sustainability beyond this – for example, in greening port facilities and providing environmentally friendly energy.
Baltic Sea Should Remain a Livable Space for Humans and Animals
With the virtual reality exhibition “Baltic Sea Life,” NABU and Scandlines offer guests on board extraordinary insights into the fascinating, worthy of protection underwater world of the Baltic Sea. Both partners share a vision: The Baltic Sea should remain a livable space for humans and animals.
Dr. Kim Detloff, NABU’s Head of Marine Protection, explains: “For NABU and Scandlines, the Baltic Sea is a unique and worthy of protection habitat – much more than just a shipping route and a place for recreation. Since humans can only protect what they know, we want to bring visitors closer to the Baltic Sea as an ecosystem with the newly opened experience world. We are excited about this shared learning space as part of our long-standing cooperation and wish everyone a lot of fun with harbor porpoises, seals, and seagrass meadows on board the Deutschland.”
The official opening with representatives from NABU, the agency Kubikfoto GmbH, and Scandlines took place on August 11, 2025.
Future Possibilities on More Ferries
“As part of our sustainability strategy, which clearly commits us to the protection of the Baltic Sea region, it is important for us to contribute to environmental awareness and to take the opportunity to address as many people as possible on this important topic,” says Heiko Kähler, Managing Director of Scandlines Deutschland GmbH.
