Feb 8, 2024 at 6:55 PMThe Association of German Shipowners VDR welcomes the deployment of the Bundeswehr in the Red Sea to protect maritime shipping. The frigate “Hessen” of the German Navy set sail today from Wilhelmshaven to safeguard trade traffic in the Red Sea. It is to protect merchant ships from attacks by Yemeni Houthi rebels as part of the EU mission “Aspides.”
(Hamburg) Martin Kröger, Managing Director of the Association of German Shipowners, says: “We are deeply concerned about the welfare of our seafarers, the integrity of the German merchant fleet, and the maintenance of free maritime trade. Without naval units, the protection of civilian maritime shipping in the waters of the Red Sea is not possible. In light of the critical situation, we welcome that Germany – like many other EU member states – is now giving this challenge the highest priority and is working hard to ensure a free and safe passage through the Suez Canal.”
Thanks and Recognition to the Soldiers
“On behalf of our member companies, we express our deepest thanks and recognition to the brave soldiers of the crew of the frigate “Hessen.” Their commitment and dedication not only ensure safety at sea but also represent the values and interests of our country on an international level,” Kröger continues. “The VDR acknowledges the challenges associated with this service and stands firmly behind our Navy. We are proud of every single person serving on the frigate Hessen and on all naval ships in the maritime region, and we thank them for their unwavering commitment to the safety of our merchant fleet,” says Kröger.
