Sep 19, 2023 at 5:23 PMTX Logistik AG has recorded a significant demand for international waste transport by rail in the current business year 2023. By the end of the year, the railway logistics company, which is part of Mercitalia Logistics (Gruppo FS Italiane), expects to triple its transports to up to 850 trains per year.
(Troisdorf) TX Logistik has successfully shifted numerous waste transports from road to rail, especially on routes of the European North-South Corridor. The company transports municipal waste across borders to recovery facilities in several European countries. Additionally, with the recent acquisition of the freight railway Exploris Deutschland Holding, new opportunities and capacities for such transports arise, as Exploris primarily focuses on rail freight transport in the conventional transport segment.
TX Logistik has specialized early on in the rail freight sector in transporting waste from various industries. The goods include not only municipal waste but also metal scrap. Since 2002, the Troisdorf-based railway logistics company has been continuously certified as a waste management specialist for carrying out such waste transports. The most recent repeat audit, in which TX Logistik was certified for consistently meeting the high quality requirements for the transport of hazardous and non-hazardous waste in Europe by rail, was successfully completed in August 2022.
For the certification, regular proof of the employees’ expertise, the technical requirements for proper transport, a seamless document and data management, as well as legal compliance and insurance coverage must be provided according to the regulations for waste management specialists under the Circular Economy and Waste Act. Employee training and further education play a significant role, as a multitude of environmental regulations and transport requirements must be observed in cross-border waste transport.
Shifting Waste Disposal to Rail Benefits the Environment
The shift of waste disposal to rail also benefits the environment. A freight train produces only about a quarter of the CO2 emissions per ton-kilometer compared to a truck. This effect becomes more pronounced the longer the distance and the larger the quantities transported. Therefore, rail freight transport plays a crucial role in reducing carbon dioxide emissions.
