Dec 7, 2022 at 6:19 PMGebrüder Weiss increases the share of renewable sources for the energy supply of its own logistics terminals: In October of this year, the international transport and logistics company commissioned a photovoltaic system at its Swiss location in Altenrhein.
(Lauterach/Altenrhein) The system of Gebrüder Weiss in Altenrhein has an installed capacity of 270 kilowatts peak and saves 20 tons of CO2 annually. For comparison: The same capacity could supply electricity to 55 single-family homes.
“The roof areas of the logistics center are ideally suited for solar power generation. With the PV system, we cover about 40 percent of the electricity demand at the site,” says Oskar Kramer, Country Manager Switzerland at Gebrüder Weiss. An expansion of the system is already planned for next year, as well as the establishment of a PV system at the Basel location.
With this latest expansion, the company is one step closer to its self-imposed environmental goal – achieving fully climate-neutral operation of its logistics facilities by 2030. Where it is technically feasible for existing facilities, the logistics provider is gradually transitioning energy generation to solar energy. For new buildings, solar systems are already standard. At locations in Austria, Germany, and Switzerland, 21 such PV systems are already in operation, saving 1,100 tons of CO2 annually. This means the company already covers ten percent of its total electricity demand in the D-A-CH region.
