Aug 3, 2021 at 6:46 PMThe logistics service provider Gebrüder Weiss is sponsoring the transport of a high-tech drilling robot from Switzerland to Las Vegas as the official logistics partner of the research team ‘Swissloop Tunneling’. This is a project of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich. The device is expected to arrive in the USA in September.
(Lauterach/Dübendorf/Las Vegas) As the official logistics partner, Gebrüder Weiss supports the research team ‘Swissloop Tunneling’ from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) Zurich. The ETH team is participating in the technical advancement of the high-speed transportation system Hyperloop. With a sponsored land and sea transport from Dübendorf, Switzerland, to Las Vegas, Gebrüder Weiss ensures that the research team can participate in the Hyperloop competition there in September with a high-tech drilling robot. The competition will focus on drilling a tunnel as quickly and accurately as possible.
The Hyperloop project, which is based on an idea by Elon Musk, aims to transport people and goods over shorter distances through tunnels below or above the Earth’s surface at high speeds. To make tunnel construction financially viable, the required drilling robots must be as fast, compact, and automated as possible. The conditions set by Elon Musk for the scientific high-tech race in Las Vegas are challenging. He has set the pace of a snail as a reference for the drilling speed, which should be exceeded as much as possible.
Thinking About the Freight Mobility of Tomorrow
“As a provider of future-oriented logistics solutions, we must already think about how we can ensure the freight mobility of tomorrow under economically feasible conditions. The Hyperloop project may still seem exotic to us today, but it promises realizable solutions for the mobility requirements of the future,” says Lothar Thoma, Managing Director Air & Sea at Gebrüder Weiss.
Stefan Kaspar, founder and co-president of Swissloop Tunneling: “Questioning existing transportation systems for people and goods and seeking feasible alternatives – our vision is nothing less than to revolutionize tunnel construction and help a technology break through. With the logistical support of Gebrüder Weiss, our vision comes one step closer to reality.”
