Dec 14, 2021 at 6:49 PMBigMile, provider of a SaaS software solution for calculating and optimizing the CO2 footprint in logistics, is the new accredited partner of the non-profit organization Smart Freight Centre (SFC), which advocates for more climate-friendly solutions in global freight transport. This involves a globally recognized method for measuring greenhouse gas emissions.
(Maarssen/Amsterdam) As part of this partnership, BigMile will enable calculations of greenhouse gas emissions for freight and logistics operations using its technology, which aligns methodologically with the Global Logistics Emissions Council Framework for Logistics Emissions Methodologies (GLEC Framework). This is a globally recognized method for measuring greenhouse gas emissions across various modes of transport.
Today, approximately 22 percent of total energy-related emissions come from the transport sector, which accounts for 14 to 16 percent of global emissions depending on the source. To reduce emissions in freight transport, companies must measure their extent across all modes of transport, from road transport to air travel to waterways.
To assist companies in capturing and visualizing the emissions generated by their logistics processes, BigMile offers a software solution designed for the calculation, allocation, and reporting of carbon emissions. The methods currently used to measure carbon emissions vary, which is why BigMile supports multiple standards. “We are proud to be an accredited partner of the SFC,” says Glenn Taylor, Head of Technology at BigMile Group.
Method for Harmonized Calculation of Greenhouse Gas Emissions
The GLEC Framework developed by the Smart Freight Centre is a globally recognized method for the harmonized calculation and compliant reporting of greenhouse gas emissions in the multimodal supply chain. It can be implemented by shippers, freight forwarders, and logistics service providers.
“An improvement in standardization is urgently needed. By choosing an SFC-accredited partner for accounting and reporting, companies can be assured that the GLEC Framework methodology is applied correctly,” comments Moritz Tölke from the Smart Freight Centre.
“We support companies in reducing their transport-related carbon emissions. As a leading provider of software solutions for optimizing the CO2 footprint, we are committed to making calculations simple, reliable, and comparable. Accreditation by the Smart Freight Centre not only shows that our calculation method aligns with the GLEC framework but also underscores its reliability,” says Glenn Taylor.
Globally Effective Standardization
Tobias Häßler, CEO of BigMile Germany, adds: “With this partnership, we are putting our software solution at the service of a globally effective standardization and optimization of the data foundation for the logistics industry’s climate protection efforts. This benefits not only the companies but also the political decision-makers at the international level.”
