(Greven, April 3, 2020) The logistics provider Fiege is distributing urgently needed protective equipment for medical personnel in Germany on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Health (BMG). In the past two weeks, the first face masks and other protective equipment such as gowns, gloves, and protective suits, as well as disinfectants, have already been delivered to the regional offices of the associations of statutory health insurance physicians and to the central warehouses of the federal states, as well as handed over to federal authorities.
Federal Health Minister Jens Spahn: “We want to protect those who are fighting the coronavirus in doctor’s offices, hospitals, and nursing homes as best as possible from infection. That’s why we, as the Federal Ministry of Health, are now centrally purchasing urgently needed protective equipment. About 37 million protective masks have arrived in Germany by the end of this week. Millions more are on the way. I thank all those involved who are helping to procure and distribute sufficient protective clothing for our medical personnel on a competitive global market.”
Day A in China on the plane – Day B delivered in Germany “In our express process, the protective equipment leaves Shanghai (China) in the morning and is delivered to all federal states during the next day,” says CEO Jens Fiege, who runs the company in the fifth generation together with his cousin Felix Fiege. “This is an incredible challenge that we can only overcome together. All partners work closely and trustfully together: from suppliers in Asia to TÜV, customs authorities, Lufthansa Cargo, the Federal Police, and the BMG as the client, to the recipients in the respective federal states. As logisticians, we can contribute to overcoming the Corona crisis.”
Fiege coordinates the delivery of various suppliers and manufacturers of protective equipment to airports in China, takes care of customs clearance and handling, and usually flies them to Germany with its partner Lufthansa Cargo. TÜV Nord checks the quality of the goods already in China. Under police protection, Fiege transports the goods from the German airports to a central transshipment point, where they are prepared for delivery to the associations of statutory health insurance physicians and the states at night under the highest safety and hygiene regulations according to a precisely defined distribution key from the BMG. The goods are then delivered nationwide within a few hours. This express process continues until the regional warehouses of the federal states and medical care provisions are sufficiently stocked. However, even in the regular process, it is ensured that the goods arriving at the distribution hub during the day and checked and released by TÜV are delivered the next day.
Another step in the emergency plan is the development of the online portal Flexfillment. The platform for the flexible allocation of storage capacities is available free of charge to logistics providers and companies.
