Jun 9, 2026 at 8:43 AMIndia’s Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) initiated the first commercial export of fresh mangoes from the northeastern Indian state of Jharkhand to the United Kingdom on June 4, 2026, in Kolkata. During the ceremony, a consignment of 1.5 tons of fresh Amrapali mangoes was presented, sourced from Beura Farmer Producer Company Ltd., a women-led producer organization from the Bano Block in the Simdega district. The export is being carried out by JGB Agrofresh Pvt. Ltd. from Kolkata to London.
Support from APEDA
The export is the result of an export-oriented capacity-building initiative organized by APEDA on May 5, 2026, for producer organizations and progressive farmers in the Simdega district. Participants in this program were informed about export requirements, quality standards, and market opportunities. Following this, APEDA facilitated the connection between Beura Farmer Producer Company Ltd. (FPC) and JGB Agrofresh Pvt. Ltd. to source export-quality mangoes from the region.
This connection enabled the producer organization to participate directly in the export value chain, facilitating access to international markets for the member farmers. The farmers associated with the FPC achieved higher returns for their products compared to prices in the domestic market.
Positive impact on agriculture
This initiative aims to promote the adoption of quality production practices, improved post-harvest management, and compliance with international standards among farmers in the region. Jharkhand offers favorable agro-climatic conditions for the cultivation of fruits and vegetables. The Amrapali mango, grown in this state, is known for its quality and market acceptance. With this export, Jharkhand joins the ranks of states offering fresh fruits in international markets.
APEDA supports the export of agricultural and processed food products through market development initiatives, capacity-building programs, quality improvement measures, traceability systems, and export promotion activities. The authority also promotes the participation of producer collectives, including women-led and indigenous organizations, in international agricultural trade.
The export of the first commercial shipment of fresh mangoes from Jharkhand is considered a significant step towards integrating the state’s producer organizations into international markets.
