The participants of the event exchanged experiences regarding the relationships between ports and their local regions and discussed the challenges related to the energy transition, sustainability, innovation, and competitiveness. Jimenez explained how the Bilbao model, recognized for urban and regional transformation, has evolved over the years. He emphasized the importance of collaboration between public administration, business, and community to turn profound changes in industry and the port sector into opportunities for economic development and urban renewal.
„The case of Bilbao has shown that processes of significant transformations can only be successfully advanced when there is a shared long-term vision and effective collaboration between institutions, business, and local communities,“ Jimenez stated. He pointed out that the region now faces new challenges after the urban transformation of Bilbao has been completed. These challenges concern the decarbonization of the economy as well as industrial competitiveness, innovation, and resilience.
