Apr 10, 2026 at 10:38 AMA recent study by Georgia Tech shows that the Port of Savannah offers significant cost savings for shippers: Compared to western ports, shippers can save more than $1,000 per container when transporting their cargo through Savannah to Atlanta, Memphis, and Nashville, as recently reported by Georgia Ports.
Chris Gaffney, Executive Director of the Supply Chain and Logistics Institute at Georgia Tech, explains: „Our research shows that when shippers evaluate total landed cost and end-to-end reliability, routing cargo through Savannah provides a clear economic advantage compared to West Coast routes.“ Gaffney emphasizes that utilizing the Port of Savannah not only reduces transportation costs but also decreases congestion and ensures more consistent traffic performance.
Shorter transport routes
In addition to cost advantages, the Port of Savannah, according to the study, offers shorter transport routes to markets in the eastern United States. An earlier study focusing on Atlanta confirmed similar findings: The shortened land routes lead to fewer cargo transfers and overall lower transportation costs, even when considering the longer distances from Asia to the U.S. East Coast.
