Maersk remains cautious in Hormuz

The Danish shipping company Maersk has commented on the situation in the Strait of Hormuz in an article by Reuters, following a two-week ceasefire agreement between the United States and Iran. According to Maersk, this ceasefire could create new opportunities for shipping traffic, but the security for a return to normal operations is still not sufficiently assured.

In the statement provided to Reuters, the company emphasizes that it is currently taking a cautious approach and will not make changes to existing services. The conflict that led to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz has severely impacted shipping traffic in the region and significantly disrupted global supply chains. Last month, Maersk suspended bookings for cargo to various ports in the Gulf region and introduced emergency surcharges for bunker fuel, according to the article.

Uncertainty remains despite ceasefire

The company states that while the ceasefire could create transit opportunities, it does not yet guarantee complete maritime security. „We need to understand all potential conditions,“ Maersk explained to Reuters. Decisions regarding the passage through the Strait of Hormuz will be based on continuous risk assessments that include close monitoring of the security situation as well as information from relevant authorities and partners.

To address the challenges in the region, Maersk has implemented a „land bridge“ system. This system utilizes ports in Jeddah (Saudi Arabia), Salalah and Sohar (Oman), as well as Khor Fakkan (United Arab Emirates), to transport cargo before it is forwarded overland in the Gulf region.
