Apr 8, 2026 at 8:52 AMThomas A. Kazakos, Secretary General of the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS), has expressed a positive view on the conditional ceasefire announced a few hours ago between the United States and Iran. In a statement, he emphasized that this step may represent the beginning of a return to stability in the region.
Kazakos pointed out that the news is a relief for the approximately 20,000 seafarers who are on the front lines of this crisis. He expressed sympathy for the civilians and seafarers who have already been injured or lost their lives.
Call for unhindered shipping
The Secretary General called for an immediate return to freedom of navigation and emphasized that states should work with the shipping industry to ensure orderly and unhindered transit through the Strait of Hormuz. Kazakos stated that this requires close coordination between the industry and national states both within and outside the Gulf region. The ICS is ready to support this process in any form.
Kazakos‘ voice carries weight: The International Chamber of Shipping is the leading global trade organization for shipowners and operators of merchant ships, representing over 80% of the world’s commercial fleet.
