According to Network Rail, this maintenance work is part of a project aimed at improving reliability and reducing delays in passenger and freight services. With the reopening of the lines, around 3,000 trains per week, including freight trains to one of the busiest container ports in the country, can now operate again.
Maintenance work carried out
The work, which was conducted during a four-day line closure, included several measures to improve track alignment in the Eastleigh rail corridor. The tasks performed included the treatment of saturated tracks, also known as Wet Beds. Additionally, the sleepers and rail bearers that support the tracks over bridges and viaducts were renewed.
Another aspect of the maintenance work was the upkeep of isolated block connections. These connections assist signal operators in determining the location of trains. Furthermore, switches and crossings were repaired to allow trains to move from one track to another. The improvement of drainage is also intended to reduce the risk of flooding, while the line vegetation was preserved.
