Apr 1, 2026 at 10:27 AMKawasaki Kisen Kaisha, Ltd. („K“ LINE) has signed an agreement for the long-term procurement of bio-LNG fuel. This measure aims to enable the use of bio-LNG (liquefied biomethane) for the fleet of LNG-powered car carriers. The agreement could lead to „K“ LINE reducing its greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 60,800 tons per year, as the company reports.
Bio-LNG represents an alternative to conventional liquefied natural gas (LNG). The fuel is derived from organic waste such as livestock manure and food scraps. „K“ LINE states that the greenhouse gas emissions over the entire lifecycle of bio-LNG, from production to use, are lower than those of conventional fuels. Another advantage of bio-LNG is that it can be used in existing LNG-powered ships without modifications.
The decision by „K“ LINE to utilize bio-LNG is part of a broader strategy to reduce the environmental impact of shipping, with the goal of achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. By implementing this technology, the company aims not only to lower its own emissions but also to contribute to promoting sustainable practices in the maritime industry.
