STEF brings more cooling to Southern Europe
Apr 1, 2026 at 1:13 PMDnata has completed the integration of its Italian ground handling company after fully acquiring its subsidiary Airport Handling. All activities in Italy will now operate under the „dnata“ brand. This development follows a gradual increase in the stake in Airport Handling over the past years.
Strengthening Presence in Rome and Milan
The integration is part of a series of measures that underline the long-term commitment of the company, founded in 1959 in Dubai (UAE), to the Italian aviation market. In 2025, Airport Handling commenced operations at Rome-Fiumicino Airport (FCO), thereby expanding dnata’s ground handling capacities beyond Milan-Malpensa (MXP) and Linate (LIN) airports. This has nearly doubled operational activities in Italy.
Recently, dnata also announced an investment of EUR 25 million to enhance cargo capacities in Milan by constructing a modern new facility at Malpensa Airport. This project aims to create additional capacities for customers and support growth in the Italian logistics sector.
From Strategic Investments to Full Acquisition
„This step reflects our long-term confidence in the Italian aviation sector,“ said Clive Sauvé-Hopkins, CEO of dnata Airport Operations. „From our beginnings in Dubai to our growing presence in Europe, dnata has always focused on providing globally aligned services while pursuing a strong local approach. Given the increasing demand, we are investing in capacities, technology, and talent to remain a trusted partner for airlines in Milan, Rome, and beyond.“
Dnata entered the Italian market in 2020 by strategically investing in Airport Handling S.p.A. and gradually increasing its stake to 70% before taking full control in 2025. The completed integration firmly positions Italy within dnata’s network and enables closer alignment with global systems, governance, and operational processes.
A Significant European Operation
Dnata’s ground handling operations in Italy are among the largest in Europe. The team supports approximately 150,000 flights annually and serves over 60 airlines. Additionally, dnata’s catering and retail division produces more than 7 million meals each year at eleven airports in Italy.
As a significant employer, dnata currently employs over 5,000 people in Italy and makes a substantial contribution to the local economy. The new cargo facility in Milan will also create more than 150 new jobs.
