Apr 1, 2026 at 10:17 AMAmerican Airlines Cargo has reaffirmed its commitment to combating illegal wildlife trafficking. Last month, a comprehensive training and information event took place at its cargo facility at Miami International Airport, attended by more than 100 employees and industry experts. The aim was to raise awareness of the risks associated with wildlife trafficking and to develop strategies for its prevention.
Collaboration for Species Conservation
American Airlines is a member of „United for Wildlife“ and actively advocates for biodiversity protection. The event included presentations from representatives of the initiative, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, HSBC, and Deloitte. A particular focus was on an exhibition showcasing previously seized wildlife products. This striking display highlighted the scale and severity of illegal wildlife trafficking to the participants and underscored the important role that professionals in the air cargo sector play in identifying and combating these crimes.
Sam Mendenhall, Vice President of Operations at American Airlines Cargo, emphasized the importance of collaboration within the industry: “Bringing together leaders from aviation, conservation, and finance creates a strong network for awareness and action. The commitment we saw in Miami demonstrates how education at all levels of the supply chain can make a real difference in the fight against illegal wildlife trafficking.”
Eric Mathieu, Managing Director of Customer Experience at American Airlines Cargo, highlighted the company’s internal commitment: “Our team members are on the front lines of global logistics. By equipping them with knowledge and tools, we empower them to actively contribute to wildlife protection worldwide.”
In 2022, American Airlines became the first U.S. airline to join „United for Wildlife.“ Since then, the company has implemented the Buckingham Palace Declaration in its cargo operations and expanded awareness initiatives across its global network. To date, educational resources and prevention materials have been distributed to more than 47 cargo stations worldwide to foster a culture of vigilance and responsibility.
The event in Miami builds on this commitment by combining education, practical examples, and cross-industry collaboration to achieve a sustainable impact. It also reflects American Airlines Cargo’s broader sustainability mission and reaffirms the company’s commitment to promoting responsible global operations.
