Mar 24, 2026 at 9:36 AMAPM Terminals has become a minority shareholder and operational partner in the Hateco Hai Phong International Container Terminal (HHIT). After three years of collaboration, during which the terminal was developed from planning to commissioning, APM Terminals now holds 49% of the shares in the facility, which is operated in partnership with the Hateco Group. This development underscores the success of the terminal, which is now capable of servicing vessels with a capacity of up to 18,000 TEU.
Strategic Importance of the Terminal
The HHIT is the largest and most modern deep-water port in northern Vietnam and features two new berths in the Lach Huyen area of Hai Phong city. The terminal leverages its advantageous natural conditions and strategic location to facilitate direct import and export of goods between northern Vietnam and the European and American markets.
Jon Goldner, Chief Executive Asia & Middle East at APM Terminals, emphasizes the significance of the partnership with Hateco: “We are proud to have developed our strategic partnership with Hateco. With this joint venture, we reaffirm our long-term commitment to Vietnam. We believe that the terminal fulfills our promise to provide smarter, more environmentally friendly, and faster logistics to deepen and advance trade in the region.”
Optimization of Operations
Tran Van Ky, Chairman of the Hateco Group, highlights that within just 30 months, the vision of a modern maritime hub for northern Vietnam has become a reality with one of the most efficient and sustainable terminals in the country. “Since we commenced operations, we have already recorded the highest berth productivity in the port of Hai Phong and set new records for automated gate operations. We look forward to working closely with APM Terminals in the coming years to further optimize the terminal’s operations and benefit our customers.”
As part of the project, APM Terminals has shared best practices in the areas of safety, port automation, the use of artificial intelligence, as well as process optimization and decarbonization. These aspects are part of the shared priorities of the public and private partners. Additionally, the terminal has been selected as part of the Gemini Cooperation, a new East-West network operated by Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd.
