Mar 24, 2026 at 8:28 AMAsia Airfreight Terminal (AAT), one of the three air cargo terminals at the world’s largest cargo airport in Hong Kong, has received the IATA ISP Environmental Assessment (IEnvA) certification, highlighting the strengthening of its sustainability management and compliance with internationally recognized environmental standards. This certification, developed by the International Air Transport Association (IATA), independently assesses how sustainability is integrated into corporate governance, operational control, and management processes. The focus is on systematic management and continuous improvement.
Mike Chew, CEO of AAT, stated: “Given the scale and continuous nature of our operations, we can make significant changes by integrating sustainability into our daily operations at all levels.” The certification confirms the maturity of the environmental management framework and the measurable progress in the areas of decarbonization, infrastructure, and governance. It reflects the commitment to lead responsibly while maintaining operational excellence.
Structure and Sustainability Initiatives
Sustainability management at AAT is organized through a robust, multi-tiered framework that includes the board, senior management, a cross-functional sustainability committee, and company-wide implementation teams. This structure ensures compliance with environmental legal obligations, performance targets, and risk management, thereby ensuring accountability at all levels of the organization. AAT’s strategy, based on operational decarbonization and resource efficiency, includes initiatives such as energy-efficient infrastructure upgrades, fleet electrification, the use of autonomous electric tractors, and the use of hydrotreated vegetable oils (HVO). These measures have led to a 33% reduction in emissions since 2018, driving AAT’s path to net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
Marie Owens Thomsen, Senior Vice President Sustainability & Chief Economist at IATA, congratulated AAT on achieving the certification and emphasized that adopting a structured and internationally oriented environmental management framework demonstrates how sustainability can be advanced in a practical and measurable way while supporting resilient and efficient air cargo operations.
The IEnvA certification complements AAT’s portfolio of international standards and industry accreditations and solidifies the company’s role as a forward-looking operator of a cargo terminal that actively supports the long-term competitiveness and sustainability of Hong Kong as a global air cargo hub.
