Mar 23, 2026 at 2:06 PMLoganair and BETA Technologies have launched the first electric flight demonstrations in the United Kingdom. This initiative includes a series of real test flights conducted on the key postal routes of Royal Mail in Scotland. The aim is to determine how electric aircraft can be integrated into daily operations to reach remote Scottish communities.
The first demonstration flights took place between Glasgow and Dundee, with additional flights planned between Aberdeen, Inverness, Wick, and the Orkney Islands. During these flights, representative letters and packages will be transported to mimic Loganair’s daily mail flights. These flights are crucial for Royal Mail’s delivery to the Orkneys and the Scottish Highlands and Islands.
BETA’s electric aircraft, the ALIA CTOL, is designed for regional cargo and passenger flights. It does not require new airport infrastructure, can take off from existing runways, and can be charged within 20 to 40 minutes. With a maximum range of 336 NM (622 km) and a payload capacity of up to 560 kg, the aircraft is well-suited for the heavily trafficked regional routes that characterize Loganair’s network.
Royal Mail delivers to all 32 million addresses in the United Kingdom daily, including the most remote communities. Fulfilling this universal service obligation on routes through the Scottish Highlands and Islands relies on a complex network of road, sea, and air transport, as well as Loganair’s over sixty years of experience providing communities with reliable air connections.
The demonstration series aims to show how electric aircraft can be seamlessly integrated into the existing network without causing disruptions. Royal Mail has announced plans to halve the use of domestic flights in 2024 to advance its strategy for achieving net-zero emissions by 2040. Electrifying some of the remaining mail flights would further reduce Royal Mail’s emissions and complements existing measures, including the use of 8,000 electric delivery vehicles and drones to connect island communities.
Luke Farajallah, CEO of Loganair, commented on the flights: „This is a significant day for European aviation, particularly for the Scottish airline Loganair. We are not talking about concepts or prototypes here, but a real program that will provide valuable data on how an electric aircraft operates in a commercial environment.“
Chris Paxton, Strategic Insight and Innovation Manager at Royal Mail, emphasized the importance of this initiative: „This is an important step towards making electric mail flights a reality for some of the most remote communities in the United Kingdom.“
Simon Newitt, Head of Sales and Support at BETA Technologies, added: „The geography of Scotland makes it one of the most compelling environments for electric aviation worldwide — short distances, existing infrastructure, and communities that have relied on reliable air connections for generations.“
