Challenges and Opportunities in Inland Shipbuilding
Mar 18, 2026 at 11:30 AMThe Railport Kędzierzyn-Koźle in the Opole Voivodeship, Poland, has expanded its rail logistics for steel and metals. The site, located near the German-Polish border and industrial centers in Silesia, is part of the Sławięcice HUB and offers comprehensive infrastructure for combined rail and road transport.
Infrastructure and Connectivity
The infrastructure of the railport includes a connecting track from DB Cargo Spedkol with a total length of approximately 50 km, as well as access to a truck scale. Through the track in Sławięcice, the railport is integrated into the international rail network, creating the conditions for seamless process control in rail and road transport.
A key component of the handling process is steel coils sourced from various European steel mills. These transports are carried out via the regular train „Silesia,“ which operates between the Polish-German border and the Kędzierzyn-Koźle rail port. Upon arrival, the coils are unloaded and stored in a warehouse, where approximately 2,500 tons are currently available. Loading onto trucks and distribution to end customers are organized upon receipt of customer orders.
Additional Goods and Services
In addition to steel coils, copper coils are also delivered by road transport and stored in the warehouse until a transport order is received. Flat sheets and profiles are also part of the railport’s portfolio. These products are likewise delivered by truck and subsequently distributed to end customers.
The railport is connected to the trans-European transport network TEN-T via the track in Sławięcice. This network defines central corridors that connect important industrial and economic areas in Europe. From the HUB, there are regular connections to Silesia as well as to Southern and Western Europe with freight trains from DB Cargo, integrating the site into cross-border transport chains.
Additionally, the railport offers a mobile wagon service for vehicle maintenance to support operational processes in rail freight transport and reduce downtime. The topic of sustainable rail transport also plays a role, with the Green Railway certificate documenting the use of environmentally friendly rail logistics.
Operational Role in Freight Transport
Due to its location between the border and the Silesian industrial area, the Railport Kędzierzyn-Koźle plays an important interface role in German-Polish freight transport. Regular traffic from the border area is combined with warehousing and regional distribution. The combination of regular train concepts, warehouse capacity, extensive track infrastructure, and TEN-T connectivity creates stable conditions for the continuous transport of steel and metals in cross-border traffic.
