Columbia Group: AI more opportunity than obstacle
Mar 18, 2026 at 9:36 AMCMA CGM has implemented alternative multimodal transport solutions in response to the current challenges in the Middle East to support the supply chains of its customers in the United Arab Emirates and the northern Gulf region, including Iraq, Bahrain, Qatar, and Kuwait. These measures aim to ensure transport without transit through the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.
Strategic Transport Solutions for the Region
Given the restrictions on maritime traffic due to the situation in the Strait of Hormuz, CMA CGM Group has prioritized the safety of its crews and employees. To ensure the continuity of trade flows in and out of the Middle East, the company is mobilizing its global networks and integrated logistics capabilities. The new multimodal solutions combine maritime, rail, and road transport routes to maintain logistics flows in the region.
The strategic ports of Khor Fakkan, Fujairah, and Sohar, located south of the Strait of Hormuz, serve as central access points for goods traffic in the Gulf region. From these ports, CMA CGM offers logistics corridors that serve the key hubs of the UAE, including Khalifa, Jebel Ali, and Sharjah, as well as other neighboring countries of the Arabian Gulf. This multimodal organization ensures the continuity and fluidity of supply chains in the region.
Alternative Transport Routes via Saudi Arabia and Oman
In addition to the connections through the UAE, CMA CGM utilizes the port of Jeddah on the Red Sea as another alternative transport route. From Jeddah, road corridors are established that enable transport to Saudi Arabia (Dammam), the UAE, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, and Iraq, either with or without maritime connections. This arrangement allows for the flow of goods to be connected with the Mediterranean and Asia without having to take on the risks of the Strait of Hormuz.
Furthermore, CMA CGM relies on the ports in the Sultanate of Oman to offer a third important road bypass. These ports facilitate road connections to the UAE and links to the Upper Gulf, combining road and feeder services and providing a reliable alternative for regional and cross-border transport.
With these measures, CMA CGM reaffirms its ability to anticipate geopolitical risks and provide robust, flexible, and secure logistics solutions to support international trade.
