Mar 17, 2026 at 11:08 AMAPM Terminals Quetzal in Guatemala has completed an expansion of its storage capacity, associated with an investment volume of USD 8 million. This measure, initiated in 2025, aims to improve the flow of goods through Guatemala’s main container port on the Pacific. The expansion increases storage capacity and is intended to enhance reliability for customers handling higher volumes through the terminal.
The investment underscores APM Terminals‘ commitment to Guatemalan trade and responds to the changing demands of customers. Larger ships are calling at fewer ports, increasing pressure on terminals to ensure consistent productivity. At the same time, cargo owners expect shorter transit times and fewer delays in their supply chains. The growing containerized trade through Puerto Quetzal necessitates additional storage space and optimized design of storage areas to support long-term growth.
The modernization focused on the RTG storage blocks A5 and A6, which were designed as highly efficient storage areas. The new layout and improved equipment optimize stacking logic and increase usable capacity within the existing area. Containers can be handled with fewer unproductive movements, with a clear separation between import, export, and transshipment goods. This redesign enhances fluidity in the warehouse and increases the flexibility of operational teams to adapt to changing flows of ships and trucks.
Improved Logistics Processes
The changes lead to a more predictable service for customers. Shipping lines benefit from more stable berthing times and better support in recovering schedules, aided by reduced storage congestion and improved equipment availability. Freight forwarders and cargo owners should experience shorter waiting times and faster movements from the gate to the warehouse, supported by better visibility of container availability.
Exporters of agricultural products, food, and industrial goods rely on fast and reliable flows of goods to ensure product quality and meet delivery commitments in global markets. The increased capacity and more efficient handling provide additional protection during seasonal peaks and sudden demand fluctuations. Importers serving the domestic market benefit from smoother terminal processes that support better inventory planning and distribution.
The expansion is part of a broader development plan for APM Terminals Quetzal. Infrastructure improvements, equipment renewal, and system optimizations are aimed at supporting future requirements and ensuring that capacity, technology, and customer service keep pace with the needs of shipping lines and cargo owners on the Pacific coast of Guatemala.
