Mar 16, 2026 at 10:47 AMAmazon Australia has announced an investment of over 750 million AUD (460 million EUR) in the construction of a new logistics center equipped with robotics technology, capable of processing over 125 million packages per year. The completion of the center in Brisbane, Queensland, is scheduled for 2028. With an area of 150,000 m², it will be one of the largest warehouses in the eastern Australian state.
Capacity and Jobs
The new logistics center will accommodate up to 15 million smaller items sold on amazon.com.au, including groceries, beauty products, electronics, and toys. At full capacity, the facility will be able to process a variety of packages, including those from small and medium-sized enterprises in Queensland that use Amazon to reach customers across Australia.
The opening of the center will create more than 1,000 local jobs. Additionally, around 2,000 more jobs will be generated during the construction and setup phase. Wayne Angus, Director of Operations at Amazon Australia, stated: “People are at the heart of our operations. By combining innovative robotics technology with skilled local talent at this modern site, we are creating a workplace where people and technology work hand in hand to serve our customers.”
Technology and Safety
Amazon states that it has continuously invested in the „enhancement of the employee experience“ in recent years. Innovations include assistive technologies that relieve employees of repetitive tasks, allowing them to focus on activities that require human judgment and skills.
One example of the robotics used is the device Hercules, which is employed in Amazon’s logistics centers. Hercules transports shelves with products to ergonomic workstations for employees. These shelves can weigh up to 500 kg, saving employees from heavy lifting and long walks. Hercules is also equipped with a 3D camera that enables it to make safe decisions and can detect the position of employees wearing special Wi-Fi transmitters.
Another example is the robot Sparrow, which is utilized in Amazon’s operational processes. Sparrow assists employees in assembling items for customer orders by picking individual products from containers and placing them into special containers for shipping to employees. Using computer vision and AI, Sparrow can identify the correct items and add them to their delivery journey.
