Mar 6, 2026 at 3:10 PMJomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) in Kenya, the main international airport of the East African country, is facing significant challenges due to congestion and limited capacities. To meet the increasing demands and improve efficiency, the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) has initiated a comprehensive plan for the expansion and modernization of the airport. This plan was developed as part of a feasibility study that was completed in February 2026.
Capacity Constraints and Planned Measures
The planned improvements include the modernization of the existing runway, the construction of new taxiways to enhance air traffic operations, and the expansion of passenger terminals. Additionally, digital systems for passenger processing will be upgraded to increase efficiency. These measures are designed to increase the airport’s capacity and improve service quality.
Development of an Airport City
Another component of the plan is the development of an airport city and a special economic zone (SEZ) that aim to position JKIA as an economic hub. These initiatives aim to maximize the economic opportunities of the airport beyond air traffic by attracting logistics, trade, manufacturing, and services. The SEZ will specifically target time-sensitive and export-oriented industries to enhance competitiveness through improved logistics and investment incentives.
The planned airport city will include commercial developments such as office buildings, hotels, and conference centers to create a sustainable urban economic area. These developments are intended not only to create jobs but also to attract foreign and domestic investments and diversify the revenues of the airport and the country.
The KAA and the Kenyan government emphasize the importance of these projects for the future aviation infrastructure of the country and the role of JKIA as a leading regional airport. The implementation of the measures will be carried out in close coordination with stakeholders to ensure transparency and information throughout the entire process.
