Feb 23, 2026 at 2:46 PMThe Council of the European Union has decided to extend the mandate of the maritime security operation „EUNAVFOR ASPIDES“ to ensure freedom of navigation in the Red Sea until February 28, 2027. This decision follows a strategic review of the operation aimed at ensuring security in relation to the ongoing crisis in the region.
Framework Conditions and Future Reviews
In this context, the Council has set a financial reference amount of nearly 15 million euros. This amount is intended to cover the common operational costs for the period from March 1, 2026, to February 28, 2027. Additionally, another strategic review of the operation is planned for the years 2026/27.
The operation „EUNAVFOR ASPIDES“ plays a central role, according to the Council, in securing freedom of navigation in the Red Sea and adjacent waters. It responds to ongoing threats to commercial and trading vessels and provides defensive maritime security. The aim is to protect ships and support stability along key shipping routes in accordance with international law.
