Post invests in branch modernization
Feb 20, 2026 at 10:34 AMFor Zeeman, modernizing its distribution center in Alphen aan den Rijn was a significant challenge that had to be managed without interrupting ongoing operations. In collaboration with the Inther Group, a comprehensive automation project was initiated, based on technological innovations and close cooperation. The goal was to replace an outdated manual sorting system with a modern automated concept that meets the company’s future growth ambitions.
Modernization of Logistics Processes
In 2018, Zeeman began planning the renewal of its logistics processes. The retailer, which has a dense store network across Europe, aimed to increase the efficiency of its operations while improving ergonomics and sustainability in the warehouse. The challenge was to implement these extensive changes within an existing building that had to remain operational throughout the renovation.
Bas Hoekstra, Director of Supply Chain at Zeeman, explains: “This is a complete redesign of all processes, systems, and working methods.” The transformation included the introduction of new technologies and collaboration with various integration partners. Inther was selected as the lead integrator to bring together the different elements and oversee the implementation of the new systems.
Comprehensive System Concept with AI Integration
The developed system concept is based on a combination of automated solutions and a modular structure tailored to Zeeman’s specific requirements. At its core is a shuttle storage system with six automated shelving aisles, allowing for flexible storage and processing of goods. The integration of Inther ILC software ensures efficient management of all incoming and outgoing goods.
The automation encompasses various processes, including cross-docking and the picking of goods. All cartons, regardless of their origin, pass through the shuttle system, which serves as the backbone of operations. The intelligent software ensures that the cartons are optimally stored and processed at the right time.
Continuous Optimization and Collaboration
The Inther Group not only supported the implementation of the system but also took on a central role in the service and maintenance process. Close collaboration with Zeeman’s technical department enables the development of maintenance plans and continuous improvements based on real-time data.
The project, which took several years, resulted in a fully scalable system that operates without SKU restrictions. Tens of thousands of cartons are processed daily to supply Zeeman’s over 1,400 stores. André Peppelman, Supply Chain Development Manager at Zeeman, emphasizes that Inther has acted as a reliable partner, successfully integrating the various components.
