Feb 19, 2026 at 8:29 AMNewcastle Airport has significantly expanded its cargo services to meet rising demand and strengthen its role as a major logistics hub. The airport has invested in new equipment in collaboration with its business partner Samson Aviation. This includes a main deck loader suitable for both passenger and cargo aircraft.
This upgrade enables the airport to transport larger and specialized cargo such as heavy machinery, aircraft components, and luxury vehicles. The airport thus supports further growth beyond the current 4,000 tons of cargo it imports and exports annually for the region.
Expansion of Cargo Capacities
Leon McQuaid, Director of Aviation Development at Newcastle Airport, commented on the new developments: “We are pleased to further strengthen Newcastle Airport’s position as a cargo gateway with the acquisition of this new equipment. It enhances our ability to handle a wider range of cargo and underscores our capability to support the growing number of businesses choosing the airport for their import and export needs.”
Paula Ives, Managing Director of Samson Aviation, added: “The investment in new equipment demonstrates Samson Aviation’s commitment to supporting the growing cargo operations at Newcastle Airport. This will create more opportunities for businesses in the Northeast, across the UK, and internationally to transport larger and specialized cargo efficiently and connect with key markets worldwide.”
The airport supports global trade through its 24/7 operations and seamless transport connections. The daily Emirates service to Dubai can carry up to 21 tons of cargo and transports a variety of goods, including automotive parts and pharmaceutical products. From Dubai, cargo can be transported to over 130 destinations worldwide, with Shanghai in China, Melbourne in Australia, and Johannesburg in South Africa being among the most popular export destinations from Newcastle.
The airport’s cargo center also offers a comprehensive range of cargo processing facilities that enable imported goods to clear customs quickly before being transported within the UK and beyond.
As part of its Master Plan 2040, the airport has outlined plans to further expand its cargo operations. This includes the construction of AirLink, a new cargo center covering 70,000 square meters, which could create thousands of jobs and boost the regional economy by up to £165 million per year.
