Modalis becomes Modal-Group
Feb 18, 2026 at 10:57 AMThe „Aurora Botnia“ from Wasaline has successfully completed its sea trials following an upgrade. With this measure, the ship now has the largest battery capacity ever installed on a RoPax vessel, as the company reports. The capacity has been increased from 2.2 MWh to 12.6 MWh.
The new batteries come from AYK Energy and enable nearly five times higher energy storage compared to the previous battery packs. This upgrade is intended not only to improve the energy efficiency of the ship but also to enhance its environmental performance. The classification society DNV has approved the upgraded system for operation in traffic.
Smooth Integration and Modernization
The upgrade was completed at BLRT Repair Yards in Finland. Wärtsilä was responsible for the system integration and claims to have implemented it within a tight schedule with minimal operational disruptions. Additionally, the Danfoss drives for the new batteries were configured and updated to the latest versions.
