This decision reflects the ongoing development and expansion of the organization’s programs and services. Over time, the Green Award Foundation has broadened its portfolio of certifications, research, and inspection activities in both maritime and inland shipping. This is in response to regulatory developments, sustainability goals, and stakeholder expectations. The creation of the COO position supports the continued alignment of these diverse programs and contributes to long-term organizational stability.
Shinohara has been part of the Rotterdam-based organization for 24 years, during which he has held various operational and leadership positions. His extensive experience will enable him to align the organization’s services to create additional value for stakeholders, strengthen safety and sustainability impacts, and improve operational efficiency. In his new role, he will oversee the operational management of the certification, research, and survey and inspection areas.
Focus on Certification Programs
His responsibilities include leading and supporting teams to ensure consistent quality and efficiency in operations. Additionally, Shinohara will translate strategic goals into operational plans and improvement initiatives. A central aspect of his role will be the further alignment and development of the diverse certification programs of the Green Award Foundation, which affect both maritime and inland shipping. This includes, among others, the SEA certification and related labels, modules on waste and greenhouse gases, as well as certifications for inland shipping and river cruises. Initiatives to support emission-free and CO₂ registration frameworks also fall under his purview.
Furthermore, the COO will maintain close relationships with customers and partners and serve as the primary contact for operational and technical inquiries. He will work closely with the Executive Director to drive the organizational development and growth of the Green Award Foundation.
In a statement regarding his appointment, Shinohara said: “The Green Award Foundation has built a strong reputation based on quality, independence, and a long-term commitment to safety and sustainability. In this role, my priority is to continue working closely with our stakeholders and the Green Award team to ensure that our programs remain effective certification and incentive platforms for the maritime industry.”
