Feb 17, 2026 at 8:18 AMThe Dubai-based aviation service provider dnata has appointed Marwan Essa as the Managing Director of its Zanzibar branch. This decision aims to strengthen the leadership structure in one of the growing aviation and tourism sectors in East Africa. In his new role, Essa will be responsible for the business development and performance of dnata in Zanzibar. This includes overseeing ground handling and cargo operations, as well as ensuring a high level of service for airlines and airport partners.
The appointment of Marwan Essa is a significant step, as he is the first Emirati to lead an international airport operation for dnata. Essa has been with the company since 2017 and has held various operational leadership positions both in the UAE and Zanzibar during this time. Most recently, he served as the Head of Operations and Acting Managing Director in the East African branch, where he supported the company through a phase of growth and increased activity.
Alexandra Doisneau, Regional CEO for Airport Operations in the Asia-Pacific region as well as the Middle East and Africa, commented on Essa: “Marwan’s career progression within dnata demonstrates the strength of our internal talent pool. He brings a deep understanding of our operational standards and has a clear focus on performance and partnership. We are confident that he will build on the solid foundations established in Zanzibar.”
Essa’s appointment underscores dnata’s long-term commitment to promoting Emirati talent and creating an environment where high-performing leaders can rise to international leadership positions. Currently, more than 280 UAE nationals work across various business areas of dnata, with over 100 in leadership roles. This reflects the company’s ongoing investments in talent development and international exposure opportunities.
Currently, dnata offers ground handling and cargo services in Zanzibar for 27 airlines, supporting approximately 5,700 flights annually. The branch serves more than 1.3 million passengers per year and handles around 6,000 tons of cargo.
With a continued focus on safety, efficiency, and service quality, dnata remains committed to supporting the growth of aviation in Zanzibar and enhancing connectivity to global markets.
