Driver shortage in Switzerland

The shortage of drivers in the transport sector is already having noticeable effects on public transport and freight transport in Switzerland. Industry experts and researchers point out, according to a statement from the Danish provider of transport systems Holo, that autonomous technologies could represent a solution to alleviate mobility in Switzerland. These technologies are not intended to replace human drivers but to complement an increasingly strained transport system.

According to Holo, Switzerland is facing a structural challenge: a significant portion of drivers will soon reach retirement age, while new hires are insufficient to meet demand. The Swiss Skills Shortage Index shows that the transport sector is among the areas with the greatest labor shortages. The consequences are already palpable, and experts from the University of Zurich and the Association of Public Transport (VÖV) warn, according to the company, that mobility in Switzerland could decline if investments in technology are not made.

Autonomous Technologies as Support

Stefan Krogh-Hansen (pictured), CEO of the mobility company Holo, emphasizes the need to consider new operational models and technologies. „The driver shortage is not a problem that we can solve solely through new hires. We need to incorporate new operational models and technologies. Autonomous vehicles cannot replace drivers but can alleviate pressure where staffing levels are insufficient,“ explains Krogh-Hansen.

Additionally, the strain on the existing transport system is highlighted. Studies from ETH Zurich show through simulations that shared autonomous fleets can reduce the number of cars by up to 90 percent. Holo emphasizes that the technology can already be used today to support operations: „Autonomous fleets can help complete a strained transport system,“ says Krogh-Hansen.
