Kuehne+Nagel, LATAM Cargo, and The Elite Flower have implemented a significant initiative to reduce emissions in international trade. As part of their largest operation with sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) in Latin America, the companies have saved approximately 300 tons of CO₂e. This measure involves the transport of more than 495 tons of flowers, equivalent to around 10 million stems, from Bogotá to Miami for Valentine’s Day, one of the most important times for the flower industry.
The initiative, now in its third year, utilizes the „Book and Claim“ process for SAF to reduce the emissions associated with the export of Colombian flowers. According to Kuehne+Nagel, the use of over 130,000 liters of SAF covers the fuel consumption of eight B767 cargo flights on this route.
Cooperation for Sustainable Solutions
Ana San Carlos, Sustainability Manager for Latin America at Kuehne+Nagel, emphasizes the importance of collaborating with partners to promote positive changes in air logistics and the perishable goods sector. „We are proud of our ongoing commitment to expand this initiative year after year and to inspire more stakeholders in Latin America and worldwide to advance decarbonization initiatives in our supply chains,“ explains San Carlos.
Cristina Oñate, VP of Sustainability and Products at LATAM Cargo, highlights that reducing emissions in the aviation industry requires multiple solutions and, above all, collaboration. „Together with our customers, we have taken another step towards sustainable aviation by applying the environmental benefits of sustainable aviation fuel in the flower supply chain. This initiative demonstrates how reducing emissions improves the speed and reliability of air transport, which is crucial for fresh products like flowers,“ says Oñate.
Alvaro Camacho, Logistics Manager at The Elite Flower, adds that nearly 40 million stems are exported via LATAM Cargo during the Valentine’s season. „This presents an operational challenge that we are addressing with the goal of doing so increasingly responsibly. The integration of SAF into our logistics processes allows us to reduce the CO₂ footprint of air transport without compromising the quality or timeliness of our flower deliveries. This type of initiative reflects our contribution to a more sustainable flower industry, where operational efficiency and environmental awareness go hand in hand.“
