Feb 12, 2026 at 1:52 PMThe Grimaldi Group has received its latest ship, the „Grande Michigan,“ in Naples. This vessel is the eighth ammonia-ready Pure Car & Truck Carrier (PCTC) of the Italian shipping company and will be deployed on the route between Asia and Europe. The „Grande Michigan“ was built by China Merchants Heavy Industries Jiangsu and is designed for a future conversion to ammonia as an alternative fuel, as stated by the shipping company.
Technical Details and Capacity
The „Grande Michigan“ measures 220 meters in length and 38 meters in width, with a gross tonnage of 93,145 tons. It can transport a maximum loading capacity of 9,000 Car Equivalent Units (CEU) and reaches a cruising speed of 18 knots. On its 14 decks, it accommodates both electric vehicles and fossil fuel vehicles.
The name of the ship honors the state of Michigan, which is regarded as a historical center of the US automotive industry, according to the company. Many major American automobile manufacturers that have collaborated with the Grimaldi Group for years have their headquarters or production facilities in this state.
Technologies Focused on Environmental Compatibility
The „Grande Michigan“ has received the Ammonia Ready notation from the Italian shipping register (RINA), confirming that it can be retrofitted for the use of ammonia as a replacement fuel. Furthermore, the ship is equipped with technologies that can reduce fuel consumption by up to 50% compared to previous models, as stated by the shipping company.
