Seafarers suffer from structural deficiencies
Feb 11, 2026 at 12:22 PMVossloh has received a contract for the modernization of a railway connection in Australia. The approximately 170-kilometer route between Maroona and the port of Portland plays a central role in the export of grain and other goods from the state of Victoria, as the company reports. The planned renewal of the infrastructure aims to increase the reliability, safety, and efficiency of the railway line.
Currently, the route is subject to restrictions regarding the permissible axle load and maximum speed. Trains are only allowed to transport an axle load of 19 tons, while the usual limit is 23 tons. Additionally, the maximum speed is limited to 40 kilometers per hour, instead of the possible 80 kilometers per hour.
The Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC) has decided to replace the worn wooden sleepers with concrete sleepers to extend the lifespan of the track. As part of this project, Vossloh will manufacture and deliver 250,000 concrete sleepers. Production of the sleepers is set to begin in February and is expected to be completed by August 2027.
