Feb 4, 2026 at 11:38 AMFinnair Cargo will insource the operations of the Cargo COOL terminal at Helsinki Airport starting January 1, 2027. This will occur through a transfer of operations from Swissport Finland, which currently manages the terminal’s processes. Employees of Swissport Finland who are currently working at the Cargo COOL terminal will be transferred to Finnair Cargo Oy.
Finnair Cargo’s decision not to continue the existing service agreement with Swissport Finland is based on a continuous evaluation of operational processes. Gabriela Hiitola, Senior Vice President of Finnair Cargo, explains: „The goal is to improve the end-to-end processes, working methods, and efficiency of Finnair Cargo, as well as to enable growth.“ The current contract with Swissport will be maintained until the end of this year.
The warehousing and transportation operations of Finnair Cargo were outsourced in 2009, and Swissport Finland has been managing these since 2019. It is estimated that the transfer of operations will affect about 150 employees from Swissport Finland who are working for Finnair Cargo. After the transition, these employees will be employed by Finnair and will retain their existing employment status.
„We warmly welcome the transitioning employees to Finnair and look forward to continuing the excellent operations at Cargo COOL as one team,“ Hiitola added.
Currently, Finnair Cargo employs around 110 professionals in air freight, so the number of employees will more than double due to the transfer of operations. Finnair Cargo is one of the largest air freight companies in Northern Europe and is a subsidiary of the passenger airline Finnair. The Cargo COOL terminal at Helsinki Airport, which opened in 2018, is considered one of the most modern air freight terminals in the world and specializes in the transport of temperature-sensitive goods such as seafood, pharmaceuticals, and other perishable items.
