Feb 3, 2026 at 9:44 AMThe decision of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to include wind propulsion in its draft safety framework for reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions is regarded by BAR Technologies as a significant advancement, as the company states. This announcement followed the 12th session of the Sub-Committee on Ship Design and Construction (SDC) of the IMO, which aims to develop transitional guidelines for wind propulsion systems by 2029.
Regulatory Changes
The integration of wind propulsion into safety regulations represents, according to BAR Technologies, an important step in regulation and could promote the use of wind technologies at sea. BAR Technologies emphasizes that this step not only creates regulatory clarity but also paves the way for the safe and commercially viable use of wind propulsion systems. The maritime industry faces the challenge of achieving the IMO’s net-zero targets by 2050. In this context, the need for emission-free propulsion systems is considered particularly urgent, as the company reports.
