Jan 29, 2026 at 10:00 AMPeter Ehler (left) will become the new managing director of RheinCargo GmbH & Co. KG. He succeeds Sascha Odermatt (right), who will focus on his role as managing director of Neuss Düsseldorfer Häfen GmbH & Co. KG (NDH) in the future. Ehler, who was previously the spokesperson for the management of AWISTA GmbH and AWISTA Kommunal in Düsseldorf, will take over the commercial management of the company on February 1, 2026.
RheinCargo GmbH & Co. KG is a joint venture of Häfen und Güterverkehr Köln AG (HGK) and NDH. The change in management occurs in a challenging environment for the logistics industry, particularly in the railway sector. Jan Huth, chairman of the supervisory board of RheinCargo, emphasizes the need for strengthened management to adapt the company to current market conditions. „Weaker industrial demand, extensive construction site closures in the network, and increased track prices are putting pressure on results and planning,“ explains Huth.
Experience and Challenges
Peter Ehler brings extensive experience from his previous role. He successfully led AWISTA Kommunal in Düsseldorf in a complex environment and will now manage RheinCargo together with the operational managing director Götz Jesberg. Huth highlights that Ehler’s expertise in dealing with various stakeholders will benefit the economic and operational performance of RheinCargo.
Julien Mounier, chairman of the supervisory board of AWISTA GmbH, expresses regret over Ehler’s departure but acknowledges the importance of the further development of RheinCargo for the region. „The further development of RheinCargo is of great significance for Düsseldorf and the region,“ says Mounier.
Ehler himself is optimistic about the new challenges. „Logistics on the rail and on the Rhine is an essential prerequisite for a prosperous economy and society in our region,“ he explains. At the same time, he emphasizes that leaving AWISTA is difficult for him, but he looks forward to the new role at RheinCargo.
The succession plan for Ehler at AWISTA is already in progress.
