Jan 29, 2026 at 11:18 AMPrangl has transported a 58-ton railcar of the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) from the Linz city harbor to the Mühlkreisbahnhof Linz Urfahr. The challenge was that there was no rail connection between the two stations, which required a special transport approach, as the company reports.
Transport Solution with Special Vehicle
To relocate the railcar, Prangl used a 9-axle rail vehicle transporter, accompanied by a 4-axle heavy-duty tractor. To safely load the railcar onto the transporter, a special loading ramp was necessary, consisting of several elements, according to the company. These parts were previously transported to the city harbor with the tractor. The ramp elements were assembled using a 50-ton mobile crane. The railcar, which measures 25.50 m in length, 2.83 m in width, and 3.80 m in height, was then pulled onto the special trailer via the loading ramp.
Challenges During Transport
At 10:00 PM, the heavy transport set off. With a total length of 36.50 m, a width of 3.80 m, a height of 4.60 m, and a total weight of 129.10 tons, the transport posed a significant challenge, according to the company. The entrance to the Mühlkreisautobahn had to be temporarily closed to allow the transport to enter. The transport required the entire width of the highway for this.
After a short drive, the transport had to stop before a bridge to lower the transporter centimeter by centimeter and pass the bridge at a crawl. The exit after the Danube Bridge also required special attention, as the curve could only be navigated very slowly.
Driving through the nighttime city center of Linz presented another challenge. Accompanying vehicles repeatedly blocked sections of the road to ensure the safe passage of the oversized transport. According to the company, the most demanding task was ultimately reversing the transporter over a distance of about 320 meters to bring the railcar back onto the tracks.
