Jan 30, 2026 at 8:07 AMCathay Cargo has transported around 60 elite horses from Europe to Hong Kong for the Longines Hong Kong International Horse Show. The event will take place from January 30 to February 1, 2026, at AsiaWorld-Expo. Cathay Cargo serves as the founding partner of the event and has built on last year’s experiences to orchestrate a complex logistics process.
The horses were transported on a 12-hour flight from Liège, Belgium, a central location with a well-equipped cargo airport and stable facilities, to Hong Kong International Airport. A chartered Boeing 747 freighter was used, whose spacious main deck and temperature-controlled environment provide optimal conditions for a safe and comfortable long-haul journey. This ensures that the horses arrive calm and ready to compete.
Dominic Perret, Director Cargo at Cathay, commented on the challenges of transportation: “It is both a privilege and a great responsibility to transport these world-class horses. We understand the pressure that riders and owners face before an elite event, which is why our goal is to eliminate travel as a stress factor.” Cathay Cargo has recorded annual growth in the field of live animal logistics and sees itself as a trusted partner for transporting animals in high-risk situations.
Optimizing Animal Transport
Given the increasing global demand for live animals as cargo, Cathay Cargo goes beyond merely transporting animals from a point of origin to a destination. The company’s solution for live animals is based on three core principles: animal comfort, optimized routes, and reliable transport.
Jo Peck, Event Director at HPower International, emphasized the importance of the partnership with Cathay Cargo: “For an international event like this, the stakes are incredibly high – there is no room for uncertainties in handling horses. That’s why we are pleased to work with Cathay Cargo for the second year, as they combine careful care and understanding of horses with the discipline of a top-tier freight operation. The safety and trust they provide allow riders and organizers to focus on the event.”
Cathay Cargo is the first provider in Asia to receive the prestigious IATA CEIV Live Animals certification, a standard that reflects deep expertise in handling complex, valuable animal transports across various species. The successful arrival of these horses underscores Cathay Cargo’s leadership in animal logistics and its ongoing partnership with one of the most anticipated equestrian events in Asia.
