ESPO has confirmed the re-certification of the Port of Barcelona according to the EcoPorts Environmental Management Standard (PERS). The port, which has been a member of „EcoPorts“ since 2005, receives this award for the fifth time, as stated by the company.
Isabelle Ryckbost, Secretary General of the European Sea Ports Organisation (ESPO), expressed positive remarks about the re-certification: “I would like to congratulate the Port of Barcelona on its renewed PERS certification. The port has a long tradition of combining economic strength and performance with environmental performance. Sustainability is truly in the DNA of the port. The willingness to renew the PERS certificate each time proves this once again.”
Tim Verhoeven, Senior Policy Advisor at ESPO and Coordinator of EcoPorts, emphasized that the Port of Barcelona continues to serve as a benchmark for efficient environmental management. “We congratulate the Port of Barcelona on the extension of their PERS certification. The port remains one of the European pioneers in promoting biodiversity programs and utilizing eco-structures,” said Verhoeven.
The „PERS Standard“
The Port Environmental Review System (PERS) is, according to ESPO, the only specific environmental standard for ports. Currently, 87 ports from 25 countries are part of this network, with 28 ports holding a PERS certification. Compliance with the PERS standard is assessed by LRQA Nederland B.V., and the certificate is valid for two years.
