Höegh Autoliners is a new WSC member
Jan 16, 2026 at 10:19 AMThe Hamburg Port Authority (HPA) has launched a new research project called „iPORTUS“ in collaboration with the Fraunhofer Center for Maritime Logistics and Services (CML) and Kongsberg Maritime Germany GmbH. This project aims to advance the digitization and automation of port operations. As part of the „IHATEC II funding guideline,“ the initiative receives financial support of approximately 1.7 million euros from the Federal Ministry of Transport (BMV).
Integration of Autonomous Systems in the Port
The main focus of „iPORTUS“ is on the integration of semi-autonomous and remotely monitored watercraft that operate with low emissions. These so-called Autonomous Surface Vessels (ASVs) are intended to navigate in complex port environments. One goal of the project is also to ensure nautical safety as well as cybersecurity. Furthermore, efforts are being made to develop a high degree of autonomy for the systems used.
Another aspect of the project is the establishment of a Remote Operation Center (ROC) that enables the monitoring and control of the autonomous watercraft. Additionally, regulatory frameworks will be developed that are necessary for approval processes and economic decisions. An initial meeting of the project partners is scheduled for January 26, 2026. During this consortium and working meeting at Fraunhofer CML, technical and organizational decisions for the coming months will be made, as reported by the Port of Hamburg.
