Jan 13, 2026 at 10:54 AMMr. Allan Kilavuka is leaving Kenya Airways Plc (KQ) as Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer. He is taking his terminal leave before the end of his contractual term after leading the airline for six years. During his tenure, Kilavuka guided Kenya Airways through the challenging period of the COVID-19 pandemic. He implemented cost-cutting measures and strategic initiatives that ensured the operational viability of the airline. Under his leadership, there was an increase in revenue, passenger numbers, and cargo volume, highlighting the airline’s competitiveness.
The management and board of Kenya Airways thank Kilavuka for his dedication and leadership and wish him success in his future endeavors. To ensure a smooth transition, Captain George Kamal, the company’s Chief Operating Officer (COO), has been appointed as Interim Managing Director and CEO effective immediately. The board will concurrently initiate a competitive recruitment process to find a permanent successor.
Experience and Qualifications of Captain Kamal
Captain Kamal brings over 29 years of leadership experience in the aviation industry, particularly in the markets of the Middle East and Africa. He has worked his way up from operational roles to executive positions, transforming several airlines in leadership roles. Most recently, he served as Operations Director at Air Arabia and as Chief Operations & Executive Officer at Iraqi Airways. Kamal holds a PhD in Business Administration and a Master of Science in Aviation Management, with expertise in innovation, digitalization, and advanced aviation systems.
The board of Kenya Airways reaffirms its support for Captain Kamal in his interim leadership role. Moving forward, the board remains focused on completing the airline’s ongoing restructuring strategy. The primary goal of this strategy is to secure operational reliability, sustainability, and growth ambitions. This also includes the search for a suitable strategic investor with the support of the shareholders.
