Emirates Receives Numerous Awards in 2025
Dec 18, 2025 at 2:41 PMHapag-Lloyd achieves another success in the field of emission-free shipping. The Zero Emission Maritime Buyers Alliance (ZEMBA) announced that the company has won the second tender for the use of hydrogen-based e-methanol. This agreement stipulates that the alliance members will collectively save at least 120,000 tons of CO₂e over a period of three years, with Hapag-Lloyd implementing the majority of this reduction.
E-Methanol as Key Technology
Starting in 2027, Hapag-Lloyd will deploy e-methanol on a transoceanic route using large, methanol-capable dual-fuel container ships. The fuel, derived from renewable energy, allows for a reduction in CO₂ intensity of at least 90 percent compared to conventional, emissions-intensive fuels over the entire lifecycle. This represents a significant advancement in efforts to reduce emissions in the shipping industry.
ZEMBA is an alliance that includes leading companies such as Amazon, IKEA, and Nike. This organization aims to accelerate the adoption of emission-free shipping. By pooling the demand of its members, it seeks to create economies of scale that enable shippers to reduce their emissions more effectively than would be possible individually.
Rolf Habben Jansen, CEO of Hapag-Lloyd, commented on winning the tender: “At a time when sourcing scalable e-fuels remains a significant challenge for the entire industry, winning the second ZEMBA tender is another important step for us. By using e-methanol, we are getting closer to our goal of achieving a net-zero fleet operation by 2045. We thank all ZEMBA members for their trust and remain firmly committed to further reducing greenhouse gas emissions and contributing to a more sustainable future for global shipping.”
Ingrid Irigoyen, President and CEO of ZEMBA, emphasized the importance of collaboration: “We welcome Hapag-Lloyd’s leadership and technical innovations in response to ZEMBA’s groundbreaking market signal. Through collaboration across the entire maritime value chain, this partnership will enable the rapid deployment of highly scalable next-generation marine fuels at sea.”
With the win of the first ZEMBA tender in 2024 for biomethane, Hapag-Lloyd has already taken an important step towards emission-free shipping. The current tender now represents the next step in scaling emission-free and nearly emission-free fuels.
